The comments of the dieticians betray their ignorance. If a food is considered GRAS - generally recognized as safe - it doesn't have to go through all the tests NEW additives have to go through. It gets a free pass. The FDA DID commission a study in 1995 that did show that MSG affected those with asthma - what can be a deadly condition. And here is EXACTLY what the FDA had to say about MSG after the independent study: http://www.msgtruth.org/contents.htm

James, it may have been that those symptoms appear hours later than the symptoms noted in the study. I notice those same symptoms myself if I accidentally ingest MSG. It still happens - even to me :( As a clue that MSG does affect muscle and joint pain, see the following link: glutamate blockers including Tramadol, Ibuprofen, Gabapentin, and Lyrica are all accepted treatments for Fibromyalgia. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/fibromyalgia/DS00079/DSECTION=treatments-and-drugs Therefore, it is becoming more obvious - since even Ketamine - used as an anesthetic (and illegal recreational drug) is also a glutamate blocker, that muscle pain and aches are affected adversely by glutamate.

Even WebMD admits that MSG affects those with fibromyalgia. They can't deny the connection now that they have found glutamate blockers work to treat it. http://www.webmd.com/fibromyalgia/guide/fibromyalgia-the-diet-connection?page=3
