Try Tyler http://teejohnny.com/ He has a fantastic personality and I believe is quite reasonably priced. Keep in mind it's going to be more than you think as a lot of the work of a photographer is after the fact and editing. But yes, you should be able to go cheaper than that quote.

You can get cheaper but that's probably a great photographer who does magazine and event shoots regularly. If you're looking for a good bang for you buck photographer, hire a keen student from NSCAD or NSCC. They'll work for less money and give you high quality work. They don't have much money to begin with, known cliental, or wage negotiating experience. They will often put their all into it because they want to have their first client like them.
