Graves is an auto immune condition that will never go away. It can go into remission, but you will always have it. You have to be careful being on hyper meds for too long. You have to keep check on your white blood cell count. If you get any kind of i nfection etc.. you have to get it checked right away. It can lead to an infection in your bone marrow. Most drs don't like to keep patients on hyper meds more than a year or two at the most before you need to make a decision. I chose surgery. I have heard too many bad stories from RAI and heard from so many that wished they would've chose surgery instead. For the best outcome look for an Endocrine Surgeon, they do more thyroidectomies than anyone. I got pregnant within one year of the surgery. We had been trying for five yrs prior to my being diagnosed with Graves/hyperthyroid. Also, instead of being put on Synthroid or Levo, you should push for NDT(natural desiccated thyroid) such as Armour, Naturethroid, WP Thyroid, etc.. It has all the thyroid hormones a natural thyroid makes T4, T3, T2, T1 and Calcitonin. Patients do so much better on it, especially if they start with it right away. Synthroid/Levo is only T4, and most people start to develop a lot of other health problems down the road being on it only. Stopthethyroidmadness.com

I personally opted for diet and small maintenance dose of Carbimazole to control mine. Graves does not go away because you remove your thyroid. I suggest you read Dr Sarfraz Zaidi book Graves' Disease and Hyperthyroidism. It helped me so much.
