I'm going to guess it's a clematis Montana, just because of how prolific and overgrown it's become, which is a pruning group 1. See this article and look at the section on renovation, which you should after it flowers. Good luck https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?pid=344

Caroline Tilling mine is worse than that and always flowers. Very difficult to prune now. I always want to give it a go bit can't work out where to start!
