Looking for a new yoga mat. Any recommendations for particular ones?
Thomas G. replied:
Have a look at the Lotus Design website (www.lotus-design.com). They have german made Oeko-tex mats which are great. They have the 'Premium' wide mats with 80 cm which are great!
Jess G. replied:
Mats are so individual - we all have different needs. I like Manduka. I need a lot of schock absorption and a very stable surface, so I have a Classic at home and a Pro Lite for taking out and about. For me, definitely worth £50. If you sweat a lot, the latex Eco Manduka might be better. Be aware it's heavy though.

I do. I specialise in hypermobility and neurodiversity. There's an overlap with FM, which is in the same cluster of conditions. www.movingprayer.co.uk

I can work with people with Fibromyalgia too. Do go with Jess as she's excellent and probably more available (I don't work many hours). If for whatever reason does not work out with her, your friend can contact me. Mail@akiomori.com

Yes, I have a fibromyalgia yoga group on a Monday morning in Horsham, just south of Gatwick. I volunteer iRest Yoga Nidra sessions for the Sussex & Surrey Fibromyalgia self help group based at Horsham Hospital. Been doing this for 15 yrs. The Monday class offers gentle body sensing connecting to drushti and breath and is all based around welcoming everything just as it is .. sahaj. Includes short, 2-15 mins, medium 15-20 mins and long 20-40 minute iRest sessions that can be recorded and practiced at home. Can also offer sessions on Skype.

Cher, if you do have an established personal yoga practice, and if you have reflected deeply on the philosophy underpinning yoga, then you will know that a 200 hr 'Intensive' delivered in just 20 days simply CANNOT allow you the time to assimilate and practise the skills you are allegedly being taught. Neither will it make you a teacher. You will just be a person who has spent several thousand GBP's or Euros (and 20 sleepless nights) on a piece of paper with the words Yoga Teacher printed on it. To be a competent teacher of ANY subject you must have a deep, practical and theoretical knowledge of, and belief in, the subject. Furthermore, to be a teacher you need to learn, practise and refine a range of teaching skills - it is not enough simply to stand at the front of the room for 90 minutes demonstrating poses and giving instructions - no matter how good you look doing it! A 200 hr, 20 day, intensive cannot give you that experience...in my opinion.
Jude M. replied:
Cher. I think what you are looking for is what is described as "fitness yoga." Which is basically yoga postures adapted as a workout to be taught by fitness instructors. As a body balance instructor you should be able to do the course which is on a weekend. Make no mistake though this does NOT make you a yoga teacher or even a yogi and what you are teaching is NOT YOGA. its a fitness class. But it's an option of you want to adapt your body balance classes. Personally I don't approve of calling it yoga, but it's there so it would be unfair not to mention it. http://www.groupxtraining.com/Yoga_-Freestyle-Fitness-Yoga-39.aspx
