Resta Detwiler - the town can't take away their IRS tax exempt status. But their 501 c3 status is just for INCOME tax - there is no law mandating that non-profits and churches are not charged property taxes. This is more of a traditional practice than a law and has been in place because it recognizes the positive contributions of these organizations to communities and the costs they save towns. Some towns/cities have started to charge hospitals and other very large non-profits - usually an agreed upon fee in lieu of taxes. There have been a number of places that have looked at charging all non-profits property taxes but I don't think it has actually passed anywhere.
