>> INTERNET AVAILABILITY THROUGHOUT THE HILL COUNTRY >Here is what is I have uncovered while working in the internet arena while providing technology services. ->The following are the Internet Options for low volume residential use (email & basic web browsing, but no movie streaming). > In the largest towns and close to Austin & San Antonio: Cable providers have high speed internet. Where available, this is the overall best solution for high speed (bandwidth) and cost. > In town and out of town (but near town): Microwave radio service that requires "Line Of Sight" to their tower. Providers include: HillCountry Network Systems, Texas Wireless and Skybeam (now re-named to Rise Broadband). Note, microwave is inherently prone to interruptions of service due to heavy weather, lightning, and anything else that disrupts the point-to-point signal, which happens more often with microwave service than any of the other technologies. Typically, these networks slow down during the day as users become active (after school kids, movie time, etc). Streaming can be like pulling an anchor. The middle and larger towns here have these microwave providers. Some folks erroneously call them "wireless" providers. > Most anywhere, including way out in the boonies: Satellite service: Exede/Wildblue and HughesNet. Careful about data limits and charges for "overdata". Generally slower data speed than above. All you need is a clear view of the southern sky to see their satellite. > Most anywhere near a cell tower: Cellular data/hotspot service: from all the major providers (ATT, Sprint, Verizon). Pricing is based on amount of data used. But, service/access is flexible, portable and typically dependable. The rules on this are changing right now, including some providers allowing rollover of data month-to-month, and higher data caps. See full details and more options on Hill Country internet providers, including phone numbers, full description, type of technology, and web links, at: www.hillcountryportal.com/hillcountryutilityservices.html#ISP > So far, I have not seen TWC, GVTC or any of the big boys being willing to extend internet service to a small residential customer if they are not already in front of your place. Maybe for big institutions, but not a single residence. Be careful of installation costs, long contracts, throttling of your dellivered bandwidth, serious speed decay during prime usage hours, who owns the equipment, who pays for repairs of it, level/degree of customer support, nearby or very distant customer support, and on-site techs or none. Router included or not. Lots of details!
