1. Lift weights, use machines sparingly. Learn how to squat with proper form (it's not bending your knees, it's sitting your butt back). Do squat, push, pull and deadlift movements. Do them heavy, do them often. Get a good night's sleep afterward.
2. Eat lots of leafy greens and lean proteins. Eat fatty fish. Lifting lots of weight will make you ravenous. This is how we get huge. Don't waste it all on donuts of you'll look awful even if you're strong as hell.
3. Protein builds muscle, protein shakes are easy ways to get a lot of protein in quickly. It's just food in drink form.
4. You want to find someone who can teach you proper form (people with a background in powerlifting or competitive sports tend to be better at this - also RKC certified kettlebell instructors) and who doesn't stick you on a treadmill for hours.

Putting on muscle mass is hella fun (way better than cutting fat). Oh and since it's your first time you will get AMAZING results REALLY fast. (so jealous of newbie gains!)

I'm an independent Personal Trainer in Hollywood and I run my own fitness site. Shoot me a DM if you want, I'd be more than happy to answer some questions about fitness or about hiring a personal trainer. I actually spend a lot of time talking people out of personal trainers in a lot of situations, this isn't a sale pitch.

I'd checkout crossfit gyms in your area. They will teach you about nutrition. Whether you want to build mass, or just be in better all around shape, it will help you. You'll probably end up making some friends, and it will cost a lot more than a 24 hour membership, but less than 1 on 1 personal training.
Once again i seek a reference from the super helpful neighbors of Glendale! anyone know of a good personal trainer in the area (yes I'm fat - don't judge). lol. i...
