You are best to look for a design that is pretty solid, and has quite a bit of detail. I would never go here in town, little current John Mckee-Twisted Image is amazing. Prices are great and doesn't jip you. If you want a good tattoo I would go there before here in town.

Look around and find the perfect artist. Check their portfolios. Trevor at Ink Fix has done some great grey work that I've seen. But make sure it's the right style.
