Erik Renick . Walking is the beginning of all exercise. Walk for hours. Walk up hills down hills but do it and do a lot. Some day you may feel like getting a pack and hiking, some day you may feel like running but it all starts with walking. I know guys hitting gyms for 20 + years and they still hike and run and walk to maintain weight.

Please note that you're posting on a blended diet page. We're pro-blended diet by definition. Please do your research and make an informed decision. Information on blended diet is at foodfortubies.com (it is sponsored by the same nonprofit that does this page, so take that into consideration). My son would be dead if we didn't start the blended diet! I know that sounds extreme but it's true! He retched so badly 20+ times per day that he ended up w a paraesophageal Hirnea! No one could figure out why &?wanted to put a jtube in...he was 2 1/2 when we started the diet & his 2 yrs of nonstop retching ...stopped from day 1 of the diet! It was a miracle! I took him to Cincinnati & the dietician there suggested it..I thought there's no way this would work...we tried every formula available every med every test! & real food is what saved him! In Cincinnati it's a regular diet for GT kids, there formula lab even makes it for you when inpatient! Kathy Santoro from Cincinnati saved his life! A dietician! Not the surgeon that wanted to cut him open & "explore"...we left buffalo & hauled ass to a place that was willing to try something new....buffalo kicked us out of the feeding clinic saying they would never support the blended diet & my son would get infections bla bla bla! Well guess what! In 8 yrs he's never had one!
Hello, I am curious if anyone here goes to Johns Hopkins and if they have a nutritionist/dietician on board and experienced with bd. My son has been on bd for over a...
Cathy S. replied:
My son actually sees Dr. Au Yeung at Hopkins and she is a big advocate of BD. We actually have not started yet, but there is a class that I will be going to in September that is 3 hours that will be giving me more info. I am sure at that time I will be able to get recommendations for dietitians.
Samantha K. replied:
We just had our first appointment with Dr. Au Yueng 2 weeks ago recommended from my sons nephrologist but she hadn't mentioned anything about a class, I will have to ask her about that. The nutritionists that work with nephrology are never too happy about my blends.. Maybe once we get the tests she ordered over with she will start helping with diet. Thanks!

My son has had vomiting issues ever since he began tube feeding. Dietician not interested in changing his food as there is sometimes a long delay since his last feed. He reacts badly to anti sickness meds. I have began to do the following and his vomiting has reduced from daily to weekly: I vent excess air several times during the day and night. Introduced a large bolus of water half an hour before a feed (as recommended by the Tubefeeding book) Halved the amount of formula milk and introduced bd instead - I'm a beginner so my mixes are quite simple and based on a pot of purée fruit or Ella's kitchen to which I add goats milk, honey, prune juice, baby rice, oil or peanut butter. I also juice based on the Dr Detox recipe by Jason Vale. Lowered his rate of feed from the recommended 200mls per hour down to 100mls per hour. Hope you find some answers x

I'm right there w ya. My son throws up too. It's beyond frustrating for me, much less him having to do it daily. Sucks Volume is our enemy and he needs a ton of calories on a bd to gain. My son is 4.5 and has dge. At this point we are back to peptamen jr night feeds w small Bd boluses during the day. I have yet to find our miracle blend. It's been years.
Hello! I am a dietitian in Tampa Florida and my hospital is trying to pilot a blenderized diet program. Before we can get funding for this, I have to show a need for it....
Julie B. replied:
Ashley, insurers should pay for the meals so not sure what type of funding would be needed? I am the founder of Real Food Blends & our meals are being served in-patient at many hospitals, and are available through Medline or Cardinal Health / Independence.

Blenderized T. replied:
Make sure that any dietitian / nutritionist is familiar with chemo protocols. My son was on a g-tube due to issues with a brain tumor (follow up with chemo). The big thing our dietitian wanted us to be aware of is that he needed a lower-protein diet, as chemo stresses out the body's ability to deal with protein. In any case, One book I really like is The Cancer Fighting Kitchen by Katz. It has some good advice on helpful herbs and spices, as well as ideas for dealing with the days surrounding chemo infusions.
