I moved to Guildford from Southampton in September for uni and live near the train station. I was wondering if anyone knows any nice places my friends and I can go and...
Dapdune Wharf - is an interesting National Trust site which celebrates the Wey Navigation - entry is down by the cricket ground in Woodbridge Road.
Kaz J. replied:
Winkworth Arboretum near Godalming, especially now the bluebells are out.
Irene S. replied:
Kirsty - don't know why I didn't mention it before, but drop into the Tourist Information Centre in the High Street (Guildford House Gallery - almost opposite Sainsburys). They will have plenty of leaflets and information about all the possibilities around the town, and can probably make some suggestions for you as well:-)
Kaz J. replied:
Godalming Staycation in the summer, with the free music in the park at the weekends.
Penny J. replied:
Watts Gallery and mausoleum is very pretty and they have a tea room
Irene S. replied:
Whitmoor Common - designated area of natural interest. http://www.surreywildlifetrust.org/reserves/whitmoor-rickford-common
Shere is beautiful and has some lovely walks, silent pool, plenty of National Trust places locally too. Assume you have been to the castle grounds? Join Discover Guildford, they do free guided walks in the local area including the chantries x
Gary E. replied:
St Catherine's
David M. replied:

Gary E. replied:

Ben D. replied:
Godalmings a nice place to visit either by bus or train and the National Trusts Winkworth Arboretum is fantastic especially in spring & autumn!
Fiona W. replied:
What do you like to do. If you want open countryside, as well as Newlands Corner you can go to The Chantries, St Marthas. A bit farther afield there is Puttenham Common. The castle grounds are quite lovely to picnic in good weather. There is a riverside walk along the River Wey. If you like historic houses, I can recommend Polesden Lacey.
Jackie A. replied:
Watts Gallery in Compton is interesting and you can walk there from Guildford via the Loseley estate. Loads of walks including North Downs way, along the towpath to Godalming or in the other direction towards Pyrford. Don't forget the castle grounds for a picnic or the little park in Millmead, and the river behind the Yvonne Arnaud!
Lila S. replied:
Newlands Corner, The Powder Mills, St Martha's, Leith Hill, Shere, Abinger Hammer
George P. replied:
The Yvonne Arnaud is also worth a visit in its own right.
Sharon H. replied:
If you have a car Alice Holt in Farnham is great for a walk
Irene S. replied:
If the ground is not too wet, go down into town to the Yvonne Arnaud (Council offices side) and over the footbridge towards the theatre ... you can then walk along the river bank. I have often walked up to the bridge at St Catherine's and turned off up Ferry Lane, then walked up to St Catherine's - good view out to the town up there too. If you want to, you can also walk out as far as Godalming along the towpath!
