Smart meter installation - electrician recommendations? Looking at solar panels but have been told the meter **box** is too outdated to support them so need to install a...
niftydog replied:
The meter belongs to ACTEW, [they'll do it for free](https://forms.actewagl.com.au/forms/smart-meter-upgrade.aspx).
tkd1900 replied:
sorry I think I might not have been very clear - one of the reps who came out said the actual meter box needed to be upgraded to a 'smart meter' - I got the impression the whole thing needs to be replaced e.g. it has ceramic switches in there
vulpes972 replied:
Contact your electricity retailer and ask them about solar or smart meter plans. If they switch you over to a smart meter plan they will arrange for the smart meter install at no cost to you. I recently had to change my plan as the solar plan I was on was discontinued. I contacted them and was moved over to a smart meter plan. From memory it took around a month for the new meter to be installed.

The electrical company will do it after you have your solar installed. They will do it for free. I just went through this process a month ago.
potatothesparky replied:
Try a company that does electrical work and solar installations, they can do the whole job for you. Give ECG Electrical a ring, can highly recommend them.

I'm getting a switchboard upgrade (which sounds like what you need as well) done to be solar-ready. Going through Blue Rain Electrical. No idea if he's any good yet but he turned up quickly to do a quote and he's been responsive and professional unlike every other electrician I tried contacting. Costing 2100 plus gst including the meter replacement (free as others have mentioned), but I've got asbestos backing in the switchboard itself so yours could be cheaper.
