Affordable - Red House or The Ivory in DR, Pattaconk or Otto in Chester. Expensive - Rustica, Good Elephant and River Tavern in Chester. We also like Vita Gustosa in East Haddam. Have fun!

We're 22 year patrons of The Killingworth Cafe. It's wonky, and cool, and the food is consistently fab. Prices are average, atmosphere is bizarro, but Janet is a chef extraordinaire, and sometimes....the Viking Helmet comes out !

I agree with LaForesta if you're looking for something higher end. It's very good but expensive. You do get a decent amount of food though. I also love Coyote Blue on the Middletown Haddam line if you've never been. Tex Mex food, eat margaritas around, & fun atmosphere. Just get there early or you'll wait. It's small.

River Tavern in Chester is the closest, I bet... there was a vegan restaurant in Chester that was great but it closed (and no, I'm not a vegan, I'm quite omnivorous) that was definitely farm to table. And yes, Firebox in Hartford is great, but more distant from Higganum.
