If you've got a Euro car (BMW, Audi, Benz, etc) give the folks at Mid Atlantic Motorwerkes a call. They do really good work. For non-Euro stuff, talk to Fauls Family Auto. They're on Pear Street (near the Sheetz on S. Main) and do really good work, no BSing, very fair prices. 540-442-8033. (Source: ran the motorsports club at JMU for two years, DIY most of my work, but when I need a shop, I need an honest, good shop)

JL's! The guy's name is Mike, and he's super nice! I had alternator trouble about a month ago and he was helpful/quick/not too expensive! Its also a towing place, so if your car needs to be towed there, they will do that for you, too. Good luck!

I've heard some really good things about Hussy's down in Bridgewater. They did a decent job of replacing part of my clutch a few years ago.

Also, what's your car trouble? There are a few of us around here that are pretty handy with a wrench.
I mean, if it's an alternator, brake pads/hoses, lights, spark plugs, or things like that, those can be knocked out in an hour or two for CONSIDERABLY less than paying someone to do it.
Example: A friend of mine's Passat needed brake pads front and rear, new calipers front and rear, new rotors front and rear, and new brake hoses rear.
His brother did some estimates, and it wouldn't been around $1500 to get all that done at a dealership.
It cost about $250 in parts to get done.
