Does anyone recall these stores where Romeo's is now on Union Ave? Right to left: Pop's Laundry, Barber Shop, Al's Drug Store, Harry's Sweetshop, bakery, the butcher...

I played baseball on Mr Bachmans team, 1967? We were called the "Raritan Ridgers" If we won a game, Mr B bought us all ice cream cones at the Sweet Shop
Lois Z. replied:
Butcher shops are pretty much a thing of the past. The butcher on Union Ave. used to give us a large pretzel stick. Nice guy!

thanks Don Fegan that was an interesting little tid-bit of information something similar happened to my dad and I. I don't know if you ever knew Hank Kiley Gene Kiley's dad. Well anyway he had owned Bottoms Up that used to be Fitzgerald's over there by Pathmark. Well that was in the early to mid 70's and he had a son named Frank that used to tend bar well anyway after we moved outta Hazlet we moved to Ocean Twp. and one day in the late 70's probably around 79 or 80 my dad and I had stopped in this little liquor store to have a drink and the bartender was no oither than Frank Kiley from Hazlet. Idk I guess its not as significant as your story but just thought I'd mention it.
