You could do it pro se. Check out the law library downtown and I believe the clerks office has decent resource (online). Maybe you'll get lucky and there will be one that sees this post!

Not a probate lawyer, but Texas has a relatively simple procedure for probate (involving a will) or intestate (no will) settlement of an Estate. Unless there is some sort of contest, there shouldn't be any real problem. If there is a contest over the Estate, then there's no amount of money or lawyers to resolve it. It generally resolves when one party runs out of one, or the other.

Usually the fees to the attorney are paid out of the estate. If there is enough money and assets in the estate to warrant an attorney, most probate attorneys will work with you on how to get those fees paid out of the estate.

You may be eligible for free legal help through Houston Volunteer Lawyers. They have a phone line open every other Wednesday (Thursday for spanish speakers) and free legal advice clinics every other Saturday.
