I've heard good things about Wix, too. Again I haven't used it (I'm a programmer so these services are basically my competition). If you are looking to have a bit more control and virtually limitless features I would recommend wordpress as a platform for most people. It's very flexible, easy to use, has tons of themes you can download so it can look very professional without much effort. Also the benefit of wordpress is that it runs on any hosting service and can usually be installed with a "1 click installer". They have a free, hosted version (wordpress.com) which is more limited but a good way to try it out and see if you like it. I would recommend using the self-hosted version (wordpress.org) for your actual site, since you probably don't want your URL to be .wordpress.com Have a look at it and if you decide to go for wordpress I can help you get it set up

Build a website using Wordpress.org and use Hostgator. You can buy templates and plugins from http://themeforest.net/ - It's easy.
