Should check out melvin, bibb pinson & segars at www.mbps-cpa.net ... great people, high quality work and reasonable rates.
P.S. No matter who you decide to go with, don't go to a chain. They usually end up being more expensive than a tax accountant would charge you anyway. Besides, you will get a free consultation and price quote at nearly any tax firm.
Edit: Also considering you have a sole proprietorship, you will really get a better service from a professional tax accounting firm than many other people will. You need to consider that you will develop a relationship with this accountant who will not only know your situation from year to year, but also give you tax planning, tax projection, and other valuable business services should you need it now or in the future. Its worth at least a consultation.

Talk to Thompson Tax on Jordan LN. I don't use them since my mother works for another firm and does mine for free. Thompson seemed like they had their crap together when I was meeting with them for other business.

We work with Paul Lindgren at [Seaman, Shinkunas & Lindgren](http://www.providencecpa.net/) I've had great experience with him and I believe most of the firm is top-notch, also reasonable rates. They're near 5 Points. I believe that if you have complicated stuff to handle, it is worth it to consult with an accountant rather than risking screwing it up or using software. Been there, done that.

I would recommend just going to an H&R Block or something similar. Most accountants will be overkill for a middle income family, I am assuming that you are not a millionaire. Most firms only deal with businesses or people with a large amount of money that don't want to pay taxes. Source: Father and brother are accountants.

We use Joe White in Madison and have for about 9 years now. He's pretty awesome, sends a packet every year to help you know what to bring him and is about the same as an H&R Block in cost but we end up getting more back than any time we went to one of those. I also acknowledge we have weird taxes so your mileage may vary.

Good question - our returns have gotten more complicated with husband doing some website work on the side and I'm out of my depth with software at this point. So a private firm would be a better deal than a chain?

We've used https://www.facebook.com/cookco for many many moons :) Both personal and various small business with employees. The best thing is that if you do get a notice from the IRS, you just pass it along to them and as enrolled agents, they handle it for you. We don't even have to go up there at tax time, just mail them documents and P&L's and such. You'll probably want to go meet with them to get started tho. http://www.cookco.us/
