Know that it's not a huge deal if you don't get your carpet cleaned. The Iowa courts ruled in 2013, and then again in 2014 that landlords legally can't force tenants to have their carpets cleaned when they move out. "Magistrate Judge Karen Egerton issued a 17 page Judgment in holding that automatic carpet cleaning charge were illegal" [Here's the link to one article about it](http://www.ictenantsclassaction.com/smallclaims.html) but you can find others if you Google search it. It hasn't trickled down to areas in Ames yet because no one has disputed it. Students don't know, so they just do it.

I used to work for Steamway about 6 years ago, they have a guarantee that if they don't do a proper job, they'll come back free of charge. And they have a standard apartment fee of (at least in 2008) $150 for a two bedroom.
