Not only is it cheaper to change your own oil but you do a better job. Not all filters are alike. Look down in them and you will see a huge difference between the cheap ones and the expensive ones. But the expensive ones - Wix at Western Auto, and Napa Gold at Napa (made by Wix) - cost only about $6, and I expect the cheap ones cost $3 or so. Western Auto has sales on filters from time to time, and NAPA probably does. I buy Mobil 1 oil when it is on sale and can be combined with a rebate, but all oil is light years better today than the best motor oil was 30 years ago. The way you can do it better for yourself is to let it drain at least 10 minutes, and even longer is better. Just as those car guys that were on Public Radio for so long always said, the crud comes out at the very end when the stream is down to a drip. You can see this yourself if you look. A commercial outfit cannot have your car on a hoist for 20 minutes, but you can vacuum your car, clean the windows, etc. while the oil is draining. So your new oil will not immediately have crud in it because you drained it. A number of people have told me that a car dealer in town is challenged to not overfill the crankcase when changing the oil but I have no experience myself with that; but maybe that too is part of doing a better job if you do it yourself. Newer cars need the exact viscosity the owner's manual says to use. All 4 cycle engines need the exact amount of oil the manufacturer says, but for auto engines that is always no more precise than one-half a quart; at least I have never seen a manual call for 4.825 quarts for example.
