A few years ago, I looked for a no-kill shelter to donate to. I recommend Best Friends. They work on a national level, have sanctuaries in Utah and Pennsylvania, and are no-kill. They try to rehab animals that were deemed non-adoptable by other shelters. Additionally, 77% of the money they raise goes towards program expenses (a lot of national shelters spend a lot more on paying their employees than on actual program expenses). http://www.bestfriends.org/ http://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=search.summary&orgid=3356 I think this is a great alternative to just gifts. Congrats on your wedding. :)

You are better off to arrange for donations to a local shelter - the "national" types tend not to benefit the animals directly, with more money going to staff than critters. You might find your local SPCA or local Humane soceity to be your best pet. Remember - no-kill shelters only wear that badge of honor because they turn other pets away... if they are full they do not have to accept more. As such supporting open admission shelters is good too - if open admission shelters got more support they would not have to euthanize so many either. I suggest local shelters.
