Not sure about marble but we have a slate floor in our shower and we love it. You have to pre-treat it to bring out the color of the stone and that pretreatment also keeps the water from staining it. I imagine something similar is probably avaiable for marble as well. Lots of hotel rooms have marble baths, so it must be workable.... but, having just done a bathroom, I can tell you there are LOTS of tiles to choose from. You don't need to settle for white at all! Try Fired Earth on the internet for some inspiration. Not sure its available in the US, but it's a good place to get inspired!
