The next-best one in walking distance is The Star, if decent-chain-pub counts as "nice". The Swan was also good last time we went. If you want better-than-a-pub I'm no help, sorry:(

Ages since we went to that restaurant, Celeste! (Hence lack of recommendation from my erstwhile other half; always used to be good, though.) I'd add The Vine in Hannington. Food may be on a par with the Kingsclere pubs but ... actually, it might be the walk over the downs that gives it that extra je ne sais quoi.
