My vet (holistic) said that vegan dogs will most likely develop a fatal heart condition around age 9. Have any of yall experienced or heard of this ?
Butterflies K. replied:
Anne Heritage explained in the 100 vegan eating dogs post that she only supplemented B12.

Three are hundreds of vet site that say taurine deficiency in dogs can lead to enlarged heart: http://www.petmd.com/dog/conditions/cardiovascular/c_dg_taurine_deficiency#.UfEMj43VB5I Plus it can cause problems with the eyes. Kisses had this too. I say supplement with taurine beyond what is in the kibble.
I'm in the UK - I think that is the US version? They are very different. UK version is: http://v-dog.co.uk/
Sarah A. replied:
Sarah, Sarah-Jane .. found this .. and a search for 'dogs' brings up a few thing too, but don't know if they are vegan, or even veggie, .. we need to bring this up in uk grp. !!
Sarah A. replied:
dorwest, i use 'keepers mix' which is what i found when looking for 'green mush' supplement (usa) which isn't available here, km is just as good, i think - http://www.veggiepets.com/shop/supplements.html
Butterflies K. replied:
Felicia Katsilis -some authorities and vets say no, I say yes...choice is yours. All the above mentioned are on the list of ingredients in V-dog. However, it was not enough to prevent our dogs from getting - so I believe in adding those supplements to the home-made meals. For some it will be adequate, but maybe not for all dogs, especially breeds susceptible to dilated cardiomyopathy. It is something that every person with a dog fed vegan, should read up about. Lack of taurine can be a cause of dilated cardiomyopathy! Taurine is naturally found in animal flesh. Vegans must supplement and ensure a synthetic or vegan source of taurine (and in my opion other amino acids) are supplemented.

I winged it (there as less info available online 10 years ago). I just found this: http://www.carnitine-taurine.com/dosage.htm
Butterflies K. replied:
Yes, get your dogs checked when they are middle aged for "dilated cardiomyopathy" or enlarged heart. Whith our first dog who was diagnosed with this condition at age 13, they immediately put her on a taurine drip. I was not, at the time, supplementing with extra taurine beside what was in her kibble or marketed cans. So she was getting some, but not enough - after that I started supplementing with taurine, l-carnitine, and later added l-arganine, too. Also algae-derived DHE/EPA or hemp oil daily are best, or something for omega 3 fats. Flax oil or flax seeds, maybe...chia seeds..not sure how well they digest, but I've seen a dull coat turn gorgeous in one week of flax oil. Also the herb Hawthorne. And Co-Enzyme Q 10. These are protocol with dogs with heart conditions and approved by vets. Reports say that l-carnitine is not preventative, but to give after a diagnose of cardiomyopathy....not sure I believe it and if I had a dog now again, I would be sure that it was in their diet. Not too much, but not too little. VeganPet ingredients includes these nutrients: http://veganpet.com.au/articles/?page_id=22 So Does V-Dog: http://v-dog.com/products/v-dog-kibble Check their ingredients...they contain what dogs need, for those who formulate meals.
