BUT Becky, if you think Noah is having starring spells (where he does not respond to touch) you must go to your Pediatrician now and get a stat referral for an EEG. That does not wait. STAT 1 hour EEG then go from there.

Thank you for all your input Erin! Dr. Epstein's office told me that we would have to go to CHOC for the epilepsy testing, so I am glad that you filled me in on how they work. We are actually going to need to see a doctor for ADHD as well. There is definitely something more going on than just straight Autism. He can't control his behaviors and focus to attend to tasks which make things like Speech difficult. We are thinking its ADHD. For the epliepsy concerns, I was called by the school about 2 weeks ago because he had an incident at school where he zoned out for a few seconds and when he came back into focus he immediately started crying and had to be consoled. He has never done that before and they were concerned that it might have been a seizure. I have always thought that seizures would be shaking and obvious. I had no idea that most of the time they aren't. He zones out all the time but never has had that reaction. I just thought it was part of his Autism. I have no idea if this was really a seizure and something new or if it has been going on for awhile. So hard to tell! I am keeping my place on the wait list with Dr. Epstein's office, but I also want to jump on this now that I am thinking there are these other two issues happening. Where exactly is Dr. McIntosh? I thinking you and I need to get to together and talk more.

Yes Becky...you need to talk to your ped today about the starring spells. He/she needs to order a STAT one hour EEG from CHOC outpatient neurodiagnostics. Then go from there. Your priority now is checking the seizures...then the ADHD/metabolic/epilepsy stuff. Dr Mc Intosh will treat/manage all of the above, but you need to find out if your referral to him needs to be stat or routine by seeing EEG results. When Noah blanks out, see if he responds to your voice, then if he responds to touch. There is a fine line between Autism blanking out and partial complex seizures, formerly called petit mal seizures.

We have done the Donnely/Epstein group at For OC Kids and now are at Dr Andrew McIntosh in Laguna. love love love both. BUT stay away from CHOC neurology....not so good. and I work for CHOC....so that says a lot

We are on the waiting list at For OC kids. It is an 8 month wait. They come highly recommended but I think that is too long to wait. I am going to stay on their wait list but try to be seen by someone else sooner. I really feel that Noah needs to be seen and assessed in the next month or two. I would get your ped to order the test. Outpatient testing is different from going to a doctor. Then when you have EEG results in your hand...you call Dr Mc Intosh or CHOC neurology and say: This is what the EEG showed and you'll know if you can wait or need to be seen.

When we lived out that way we took Alec to Dr. Becker, a pediatrician in Murrieta. He was great and the office staff was efficient but I don't know if he is still there; this was 2001-2002
