I really doubt that story about John being hungover or a drunk. I have interacted with him professionally hundreds of times and have not seen anything like that. Launching a personal attack like that is not cool. I am not sure that John even does custody cases, or at least he didn't used to. Attorneys around here that do family law are in no particular order: Carly Kruse, Nathan Garcia, Jim Gardner, Paul Pierson, Jeremiah "Buzz" Scannell, Kim Olin, Bruce Nishioka, Chris Keusink, and maybe Pat Foley. None of these individuals will be a "Pro Bono Custody Lawyer." There are some organizations that receive funding to help low income individuals. It would also be helpful if you could find a therapist, if you are able to, that specifically deals with PTSD. I recently did that (for a different issue) and my outlook on life and day to day coping skills are so much better than they were before. I'm a local lawyer, though I don't practice in this area. Consider contacting the [Victim Rights Law Center](https://www.victimrights.org/), based here in Portland, which specifically works to assist folks in situations like yours, and provides training to lawyers on how to represent survivors of domestic violence. They have hotline to speak with an attorney. In many jurisdictions (I'm not actually sure about OR), when a spouse is in prison for crimes with a domestic element (or in some states, any felony), divorce is pretty close to automatic, you just have to draft it in a specific way showing that's the reason (vs. more common, "no fault" divorces). FWIW, I don't recommend /legaladvice, although many other lawyers disagree with me. We have strong ethical guidance from the first day of school explaining why you shouldn't give advice casually, without full facts, and without a representation agreement- the folks in that sub tend to a) have taken that to heart, and give long-winded answers that translate to "you should talk to a local attorney," or b) ignore it, which makes me question their judgment. Also, I'm kind of giving away a secret here, but the Bar Association referral lists are just lists of lawyers who have signed up and specified what regions and practice areas they are interested in. There's nothing inherently wrong with that (I'm on a few), but you should still interview the lawyer they suggest to make sure it's a good fit.

You could also try posting this to /r/legaladvice - you won't get solicitations from individual lawyers (against that sub's policy), but you'll likely get references to organizations that can help you in your specific situation and can help you find the right kind of attorney.
