Stay FAR away from Allen Edwin homes, my wife and I had a terrible experience (lack of communication, false advertising) example: want a dual vanity sink in your bathroom? They charge $1500 extra. Want your main floor painted something other than white? That's $3000 Complete ripoff IMO

Scott Scheltema Construction The custom work that he can do is unbelievable. Kitchens, cabinets, you name it.

JS Hersman Builders. Family friends who built out house and helped do massive reconstruction of our cottage. Definitely check them out

Contact Ledger Builders. Some of the best around in west Michigan, and they fit right into your price range.

I've worked for both Koetje Builders and Gary Veldink Construction in the past and both companies have my highest respect. They're family owned, honest business'. There isn't a thing I wouldn't trust either man to do.

I would start with the Grand Rapids HBA. http://www.mygrhome.com/ Koetje is good and I've also heard great things about Baumann in Holland. Whatever you do, make sure you are comfortable and confident with the builder you choose.
Corn_cobb replied:
No one builds a better home than John Lee Koetje. He is as honest and straightforward as it gets and will bend over backward for his clients. I am an HVAC contractor that has worked for many builders in the area and I wouldn't go anywhere else. As far as the worst builders go...Allen Edwin is remedial at best. I can not begin to express how poor their entire operation is from a quality standpoint. I have no clue how they even meet code in any regard. Run away.

Avoid Allen Edwin with every fiber in your body. We live in a neighborhood with many of their homes, and it's embarrassing how bad they are. The stories I have about them could be an entire chapter. Groot Builders - We have had 2 homes build by them. Custom homes, and the workmanship is second to none. We just had a home build for $235K, and it's our dream home. our last home build by them had ZERO problems in the six years we lived there. Every home i have seen them build is the highest quality.

You could always go to the Home Builders Association and ask them....

Avoid Sable. Total Allen Edwin clone but even better at taking advantage of naive and first time buyers. If the price per square foot sounds too good to be true, consider how they're saving their money.
inactive_ninja replied:
Jim Tibbe builders are one to look at. Stay far away from Sable. Might as well call them Allen Edwin Jr.

[Scott Christopher Homes](http://www.scottchristopherhomes.com/about/) specializes in high-end homes, and I've seen a lot of their work, first-hand, in the Ada area. They're the best in town, and worth checking-out, regardless of how much you're looking to spend. It doesn't hurt to ask...

I could recommend Visser Builders. They build many houses around the GR area and are highly respected in their field. Also, Ver Woert construction built a lot of houses on the old granite lakes near Jenison. Check them out if you'd like.

Zaskowski builders are good family friends of ours. They do excellent work.
Does anyone on here build tracks, or know of a good track builder? I'm located around Lansing area.

coming from someone who rented a dozer and took a week off work to build it and payed for the fuel. Hire Jeremy Booher to do it. 1500.00 dozer. 1000 in fuel week off work 1000 and sitting in that rough as thing for 50 hrs. Cheaper and less stress to hire it done.
