I'd like to learn how to shoot a handgun and get a license to carry in purse, etc. for protection purposes (not a big gun person, but a single mom and need for safety)....

Eagle Gun Range is great, especially on Tuesdays - Ladies Day. $5 range fees and free rental on guns, so you can try lots of them. I took a basic class there and also the CHL (now called License to Carry or LTC) class. Basic class is $100 ($5 to rent a gun), and the LTC class is $75. Other costs: you'll need eye and ear protection, which Eagle sells for $5. You'll also have to buy ammo, which can get pretty pricey if you're shooting a lot.

I'm hoping to do my LTC class within the month at Eagle Gun Range. A little nervous Cuz it's been a while since I've shot but still I have heard excellent things about them.

You have several options. Jerry Rayburn teaches LTC classes and basic coarse and is highly recommended. Mike Lane also teaches LTC classes and if you contact him he could let you know what he could offer, also highly recommended. Eagle Gun Range is a good option, you can rent a gun and they can provide you with an instructor.

Thanks for the kind words all! I learned yesterday that my website crashed and I am having to rebuild it tonight. I hope to get it back up soon. www.TexasCHL.com I do have Christmas cards with gift certificates available if you'd like to have something to present under the tree or hanging from a stocking. Just email me at mike@TexasCHL.com to arrange for pick-up. I can deliver one to you up at the police department after work. Thanks!

DFW Shooters Academy in Highland Village arranged an hour-long course for my wife and I last December. The instructor's name was Zach and he was very good. He went through safety, stance/grip, and some range time. $60 for an hour, pistol and ammo included. You can also check out Frisco Gun Club. EDIT: That was $60 for each of us, for a total of $120 combined.

Yes, Mike Lane. Eagle Gun Range is another option as well.
