Kauai is the best island!! You can rent privately owned 1 bedroom condos for around $125/135 per night, plus cleaning fee. We go about every other year and have stayed here a few times: www.prince-kuhio.com. You can also get a little bit cheaper car rental through that site. Never have had a problem. With a full one bedroom you don't have to eat out every meal, we would usually pick up some groceries for breakfast, lunch and go out for dinner. Maybe cereal, waffles, lunch meat, bread, snacks and drinks. I think they all have a cooler to pack up and take with you for the day! I recommend spending the money and rent a jeep wrangler!

as a family, we went to Honolulu, Oahu. If you have kids it is a good tourist island. - Pearl Harbor, Waikiki Beach, the North Shore, Hanauma Bay (beach and snorkling). Diamond Head. We didn't always use the "official tours", but used the self employed people with big vans/busses - it saved a lot of money. Here is a good website of attractions: http://www.gohawaii.com/

You can message me if you'd like for more details....http://www.101 thingstodo.com/kauai/ Plus, if you can, I've found it's cheaper to fly out on a Wednesday and come back Wednesday, Thursday...It's usually about $200-$300 cheaper.

Try Kate Karger at AAA Maple Grove. We've used her for years and have sent many people to her and they all had great vacations.
