I looked into this a while back, for the same reason, the "puppy parties" you may have heard of are actually not puppies but smaller dogs. There are petting zoo parties too, a service will bring all sorts of things, ducks, pig, etc. much healthier looking than the normal starved animals you see at fair petting zoos.

My daughter rode for seven years at Mill Creek in Topanga. Pricey but gorgeous and they do treat their horses well.
