Plan well. You don't need as much room as you think you do. Keep things square, bumps and gables and the like cost more. There are very few plans for good homesteading type houses but I'd try archives.org and see if there are any old house plans on there. I haven't looked but they may have some. If I every built I'd do one of the houses that I have plans for that are from the 1910-20 s. They are small, square, and have the things a homesteader needs.

Wayne, I liked 51 ok but couldn't sell my husband because he thought it was too modern. I like the one listed below as an ideal because it has 4 bedrooms and I love the half story so I can shoo my loud little kids up there. Also has a really open floor plan and I love how the dining table is along those great windows.
