Can anyone recommend a craftsman/contractor that they've worked with? Recently bought a house, and we've been talking to contractors about a few jobs, but they just keep...

Shoot me a pm with a bit more detail. Age of house, location, material for railing, type of shelving, rough budget etc. If it's not something we can take on due to limited scope/budget/timeline I can refer you to others that can. This would be assuming you are looking for true custom handicrafts beyond the scope of what a handyman would put together.

Which contractors flaked? I need custom bookshelves, too, so very curious.

You need to sign up for Angie's list. Or try Nextdoor.com and get a recommendation from a neighbor.

Josh Hager is your man. http://www.triplecrowncarpentry.com/ I would bet there is a sizeable wait for him right now, so if you need someone fast, keep shopping. But his work is absolutely superb. Josh built these for us... http://imgur.com/a/kCnVO The top photo (with my giant sleeping dog in frame) is a bookshelf he built first for us. The house had been set up so the room beyond those two pillars was a sitting room and a formal dining room. But we didn't like it that way, so we put the bookshelf between those pillars (double sided book shelf), and we turned that space beyond the pillars into a living room and computer room. A year later we decided that what had originally been the downstairs "living room" didn't really serve that purpose very well. So in the big recessed area against the wall where a couch was supposed to go, we had Josh install a Bookshelf & Bar (an idea he actually had suggested a year earlier when he installed the other bookshelf), and we changed that room out to hardwood flooring and made it the dining room. Josh works a bit differently than others, at least he did a few years ago when he made these for us. He comes out, does an assessment, and then once you're agreed on that, he gets a materials estimate together. You owe him 100% of material costs and half of the labor costs in order to get on his waiting list, and then you owe him the remainder at job's completion. Like I said, if you're in a hurry, I'm sure someone else can help. But Josh is very much worth the wait.

www.urbanrootdb.com I used to work for Rex the owner. He is a very nice guy, very attentive to detail and will make sure your visions align before he gets to work. He self performs most carpentry jobs to ensure they are done right. Give him a call.

We used Mike Guidry with Guidry carpentry services. We had to wait a few weeks to get on his schedule (this was back in fall of 2013) but were very happy with his work. He's an honest guy and the final product was better than we originally thought we wanted. https://m.facebook.com/GuidryCarpentryServices/info/?ref=page_internal&mt_nav=1

I don't have any good contractors to offer but from my current experience, do not use Pro Build (Jarod Kennedy).
