We are from western NY, we left in January many years because if my work and it was not fun until we got well south of I 40. I would suggest a flight to San Antonio or Phoenix (or any other large city in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona which are RV rental meccas and start from there. Most rental agencies won;t permit you to tow your car anyhow so it is best to leave it in the garage and fly out and in. I do not usggest CA as with the new tax fuel prices are very high $3.29 for regular gas!

Check out using https://www.outdoorsy.com/r/webnomads. We rented our RV out and it could be a way better experience then CruiseAmerica for renting a RV. Insurance is included in the fee, and so is training on how to use the RV by the owner.
