I had an exterminator tell me just go get some Home Defense at Home Depot. He said it's the same stuff he uses. And, unless you change the wood they like, they will stay FOREVER and come back every year!! Good luck!!

You do not have to change the wood to a different one unless rotted as water makes it in the holes and starts the process, just make sure your wood does not go bare on the paint. If you have holes yet solid just fill before you repaint and after treatment.They tend not bore through painted wood, but will stained wood. We had bad carpenter ants when we moved in last year--I used diatomaceous earth (get it at Tractor Supply), spread around my baseboards, windows, and outside around the foundation, anywhere I saw them. Do it weekly throughout the summer, or whenever you see an ant. Safe around kids and pets. They haven't come back.
