Going by Paul's website: Paul is now an affiliated partner with a Private Equity firm in Singapore. Together they have developed a strategy that enables successful SMEs and family companies to take a ‘quantum leap’ and become listed PLCs as part of international groups, with numerous benefits including cross-pollination of client bases. Find out more about Paul’s approach and services here.

My website is www.pauljohnson.xyz I qualified as an FCCA (Chartered Certified Accountant) in 1995 and a CTA (Chartered Tax adviser) in 1998 but I sold my Accountancy practice in 2003. I specialise in exit strategies for SME's but many of my clients require Accountancy type work (business plans, due diligence exercises, management accounts etc.) services I don't wish to provide, I'd rather focus entirely on exit strategies and M&A / stock market listings. So, I'm looking for Accountancy practices around the UK to partner with in a mutually beneficial way.

I'm looking for an accountant..... I'm currently a sole trader but want to look into the possibility of being a limited company.
Who could help and give me some advice...
Lesley J. replied:
Hi James, moving from sole trader to limited company isn't as daunting as you think, there are a few steps you need to follow for the changeover process should you wish to change to being a limited company which I will enter below. Step 1: Inform all of your existing customers, suppliers, lenders, service providers and employees that you are going to start trading as a Limited Company. Step 2: If you do not have a business bank account, set one up in your company name. Your accounting requirements will be more complex when you begin trading as a Limited Company. Step 3: Let HMRC know that you have stopped working as a Sole Trader. Complete your Self-Assessment tax return as usual. After this you will need to submit tax returns the following year as a director and shareholder. Step 4: Within 3 months of starting to trade through your company, you must register with HMRC for Corporation Tax. Step 5: If your sole trader business is already registered for VAT, you will have to cancel your VAT registration within 30 days of the change and then and re-register through the company. Step 6: To be able to pay yourself a director’s salary, you must first register your company as an employer. If you already employ people, you should speak to HMRC about the change of business structure. The financial and administrative responsibilties of running a limited company are certainly a lot greater than those of a small trader, however there are benefits a limited company have over the self employed route. Essentially you can keep your existing business set-up and clients and continue trading as normal, but you will need to change the legal structure of your business. I hope this helps you in some way and should you require any further advice please don't hesitate to ask:)

Who can suggest a good accounting package/app for a 1 person business
Sertan D. replied:
Have a look at quickfile.co.uk. It’s free and does everything the likes of Xero and Quickbooks can such as uploading receipts from your phone and is also cloud based. Have moved all 3 of my companies over, works great and after my accountant stopped pushing Xero on me (as they get a kick back) they now love it too!
