I'm looking for some advice on back pain.
I've been in pretty much constant pain for months now-neck, middle, lower back. Sometimes I get up in the morning, and just...

The practice of lying on the floor with your feet supported in an "L" position that Sigrid suggested sounds like a classic position from the Egoscue book "Pain Free". I also agree with every one who said that core strengthening exercises are critically important, but be careful with sit-ups, especially if you have lower back issues. Sit-ups can really aggravate or trigger low back problems (I have also had low back pain at times, but not recently). There are plenty of other good core strengthening workouts that can be done that do not involve sit-ups. I have also found a very good yoga series on the Internet that has many free videos you can use to guide your yoga at home (I play them on my iPad so I can take them anywhere, but in any case it is helpful if you can set up an internet connected computer in a space where you can see the instructor on screen while you are working out). You can find one of the videos from the series I have been using here: http://www.melissawest.com/namaste-yoga-101-yoga-for-beginners/

Join Planet Fitness, which is the monthly cost of one visit to the PT. They will give you exercises (or you can get some from your chiropractor). For the pain, get lidocaine patches. They are generic now and you cannot believe how they ease the pain -- with NO side effects!!
Sorry to hear about all of your problems with pain. I'm also dealing with chronic pain in various parts of my body. Yoga helps, and so does physical therapy. It pays to go for physical therapy if only for a while because the physical therapist can give you exercises that are tailored to your issues, and even yoga can be hard to do effectively if you have chronic bad alignment habits and/or do not have a good idea of where to start. I also know that when you have pain in a lot if places it can get expensive and frustrating trying to tackle one body part at a time. My primary MD sent me to an orthopedic surgeon who, of course, has recommended major surgery, which I am determined to avoid. Finally, my sister recently recommended a book to me called "Pain Free", by Pete Egoscue, and I am reading it. She says she knows several people who "swear by" this system of exercises he has developed and I have started to apply some of his concepts with good results. The major premise of this book is that most joint pain issues are caused by habits of movement and disuse that tend to throw off the natural physical alignment of the joints and this causes pain. The book is great in that it has chapters on every body part and instructions (with photos) for exercises you can do on your own for your specific issues. It talks about the body as a system where different parts can be thrown out of alignment and eventually start to hurt when muscles are called into new uses in reaction to other injuries that you have developed habits to compensate for. It also has a regimen you can continue to do once you have tacked the specific joint complaints you started with to help you maintain your musculoskeletal system. That's a lot of information, and of course this method requires that you do the exercises to get the relief, but I am feeling very optimistic about this method and I would definitely recommend you make a small investment to buy and read the book. As a dancer and someone who has developed quite a bit of body awareness over the years this method makes a lot of sense to me and I will be applying it for myself over the coming months. It is too early to say whether it will ultimately help all of my issues or prevent that surgery, but it is definitely worth a try.

Iyengar Yoga has a healing method that is amazing. My Iyengar teacher has a studio with all sorts of things to help support postures so I could benefit from postures without having the strength or flexibility to get into the postures on my own. She also traveled to India regularly and was masterful at the healing methods

From the stupid questions department... have you looked into your insurance options at healthcare.gov? You may have cheaper options. I finally have super-affordable healthcare and will begin seeing a chiropractor/sacro-cranial guy soon. I am now seeing a podiatrist who is setting my feet straight, and that too can affect how one's back is. I see there are a lot of good suggestions here already, but I'll add a couple more... Homoepathic arnica gel for short term muscle pain relief usually works. Sometimes heat, sometimes ice (see a specialist first to determine which is better for you). What you sleep on, how you sit and what shoes you wear also matter. Meanwhile... a gentle (((healing hug))) for you.
