Rug pads worked wonders for us. Keeps the rugs from moving and you can control how soft you want them. Buy whatever rug you like and adjust it to your needs.

Rugs are awesome but unfortunately won’t stop your floor from creaking. We had a house with super creaky floors and tried everything (nailing, baby powder, etc) but nothing helped. When we sold it my husband put tung oil on the floor and that surprisingly helped quite a bit. Wish we had done it earlier. Fwiw our floors needed some tlc which was why we applied the oil - it did help their appearance. May want to check with your landlord though before doing that.

Get a thick rug pad, they are so cushy on your feet and will definitely absorb some noise. And for a rug, Wayfare has some great options

Rugs.com is cheap but the carpet themselves are thin so you’d need to get a pad for underneath

I just bought one about a month ago. I mostly looked on Wayfair, Rugs.com, and Rugsusa.com. I ended up going with one from Wayfair. For all the discount websites, it’s important to look at the reviews of the rugs. Reviews with photos are especially helpful! If the rug you like doesn’t have a lot of reviews, see if there are reviews for similar things made by the same manufacturer. Also, you probably already knew this, but look for a button/link that says “filter” towards the top of the page. You’ll be able to browse, for example, only high-pile rugs that are the size and color you’re looking for. It will save a ton of time!
