Not a restaurant as such but the Vitualienmarkt round the corner from where you are staying is great for lunchtime bites. Good value and loads of choice, I like getting either Gyros or a Fischsemmel.

There's quite a good district of good German food on the Schellingstraße. For traditional good German food try the Atzinger, Alter Simpl, and the Schelling Salon, all in the same student neighbourhood, all casual dining. These places have been open since the 1800's and have a real local feel to them. Good beer pretty much guaranteed anywhere you go. For non-traditional food, Hans im Glück is an excellent burger place with a great atmosphere and food (and multiple locations) and Restaurant Jasmin has the best Asian food in the city, if you're into that. For context, I'm a Canadian living in Munich.

I will clarify the "not too pricey" part. Anything under 100 Euro per meal is fine. Drinks, of course, would be extra, depending on how "thirsty" we feel.

Something i really can recommend is the restaurant in the munich national museum. http://www.bnmrestaurant.de/index.html they have great food and are surprisingly cheap, especially for lunch. they usually have a menu for lunch which is around 35-45 euros and is on par with 1 star restaurants

Firstly, you're going to have a great time! Munich is a cracking city. I've three places to recommend. Wirtshaus zur Brez'n is a great spot. Eat the meat, drink the beer, you can't go wrong. Secondly, Lindwurmstuberl is a wonderful spot where the locals will go for food. There isn't a bad dish in the place. Thirdly, lots of people will say that you should go to the Hofbrauhaus, and I would say go there and take a look at the place, but definitely go to the Hofbraukeller. Owned by the same crowd, but a bit further out and full of character and charm. Take a walking tour round the city. You'll have a wonderful time. Enjoy!

I think that the Pschorr near Viktualienmarkt has the best food as far as brew pubs go... the other's are good for beer-drinking atmosphere and people watching!
Can anyone recommend a good hotel/hostel in Munich over New Years? We don't mind simple, but I'd like something clean. Ideally nice and central to all the celebrations....
swollencornholio replied:
Wombats, Jaeger's, and Euro Youth are probably the most fun and are clean. They are all on the same street right next to each other close to Hauptbahnhof. So it's easy to get around from there. Should be great for New Years. I would probably go with Euro Youth. http://www.hostelz.com/hostels/Germany/Munich

Define cheap.

I stayed at Pension Locarno, which is literally right next to the Hauptbahnhof. The rates were good - the room wasn't spectacular, but it was clean and nice looking, and it had Wi-Fi!

I am positive that every single -not privatley owned- place to sleep in munich falls under "clean". Would not worry about that too much.

I always recommend the [Dolomit](http://hotel-dolomit.de/). It's near the Hauptbahnhof and thus on a major local traffic hub, it's clean (do ask for the premium rooms, though), and rates are fair.
