My mare gets soaked alfalfa cubes twice a day - she had a mild colic a couple months ago. She gets a lot of senior feed (hard keeper) AND at least 12 hours of pasture time and free feed hay outside and 4 flakes a day inside. The alfalfa has not made her hot at all. She gets Gleam and Gain (SmartPak), Mare Magic, and Farrier's Formula as supplements. The Gleam and Gain is good stuff - I've got my pastured OTTB on it now too since he dropped too much weight with the last two freezes we had.
