Our 13 wk old is favouring one side when he lays down and therefore has minor head shape issues. We have been given an open referral to a pediatrician...

Hi, my daughter who is now 5 months old had this. It's called Plagiocephaly and it has varying stages/ degrees of how bad it is. My daughter was only stage 1 which is apparently not so bad. We went through a physiotherapist but also saw Dr DeCourcey. Basically they get you to do LOADS of tummy time and adjust how you feed and hold them so they don't get a stiffness in one side. Also, after she fell asleep I pushed a rolled hand towel under the bassinet sheet to make her go to the other side. That didn't really work though because she would just shimmy away from it and roll her head back to how she liked it. Ha! Happy for you to msg me if you want

This is an issue Chiropractors see frequently. Happy to refer you to kiddie chiropractor close to you if you PM me your location. Good luck! The following article was published in Australian Spinal Research Foundation newsletter. CJA recently published a case series by Dr. Neil Davies (CJA 2002; 32:52-5), that describes the chiropractic care given to 25 infants who had each met the diagnostic criteria for what is called non-stenotic deformational plagiocephaly (NDP). NDP is of importance because it seems to put infants at increased risk of developmental delay, which Dr. Davies informs us, may manifest as learning difficulties during an individual’s schooling. The stated objective of the case series was to compare the rate of resolution of NDP in those infants under chiropractic care to the rate of resolution that occurs through natural history and what has been called ‘device-dependent therapy’. The results suggest that all 25 patients in the case series, each of whom we are told received chiropractic care focused on the upper cervical spine and no other form of intervention, achieved complete resolution of their NDP in a mean time of 3.64 months. Furthermore, the mean number of adjustments required for this 100% success was only 1.8. The author concludes that, “The early implementation of chiropractic care for infants with deformational plagiocephaly may play a critical role in reducing the sequelae of NDP in the school-age population”.
