Hey, they are almost assuredly not bees. Most likely the common aerial yellowjacket. Does the nest look like this?...

My lower leg swelled so bad I couldn't see my ankle bones....there was a massive bruise and a constant itch that just stopped yesterday. the swelling in almost entirley gone...I share this just to point out that being stung is no fun as as adult never mind the reaction for a child!
