I did have a bad experience with one of the vets on Long Island that was mentioned in this thread but they are not board certified avian vets and I would suggest to make sure that the vet your friend goes to is a board certified avian vet.

Shelly S. replied:
Dr. Malka is excellent. He is in Great Neck. Dr. Renna works with him, and she is also wonderful.
Abbe H. replied:
After reading another post where Dr Hoeferâs staff would not squeeze in what at the time appeared to an emergency I would no longer recommend her especially since this bird was already an established client.
Jean M. replied:
Dr. Monaco, Old Country Animal in plainview!
Christina D. replied:
I agree with dr. Monaco. He's always taken excellent care of my budgies when they've gotten sick. Dr. Malka is great also, but they were a bit more expensive there and wanted to run a lot of tests that I unfortunately couldn't afford and also personally felt were unnecessary
Can anyone recommend an Aviary vet in the Nassau area?? But not the one in Great Neck... I found them to be quite expensive and lacking personality... Next year I want...
Joan N. replied:
I use Dr Monaco in Plainview. Old Country Animal Hospital.

Dr Hoeffer is excellent as well as Dr Davis in that office.
Jean M. replied:
I've been seeing Dr. Monaco for at least ten years with my four!
Mary R. replied:
There is a place on Sunrise in West Islip. They have one avian vet there. She got her degree about 5 years ago. I'm pretty sure she can do a wellness check but if something was an emergency during the day I would totally get to Dr. Hoeffer as I'm not sure just how much experience she really gets there since they are not truly an exotic animal business.
Joan N. replied:
I don't believe that they see birds however VMCLI is very close in Islip on Sunrise Hwy and Dr. Mehlrose is an avian vet. 587-0800
Cay T. replied:
I use Dr Mehlrose at VMCLI and I have been really happy with him and his staff, including during the 4 months we battled my lovebird's cancer. Hoeffer and Monaco are both great but a bit of a schlep, and as much as I love Dr Monaco my birds never seem to have emergencies when he's available. I feel better knowing the have my fids' records and Dr Mehlrose on call if I have an emergency off hours
Keith C. replied:
Dr. Melrose - VMCLI #1 place 4 ur pets.
Jennifer M. replied:
Heid Hoefer in Huntington
Vickie G. replied:
Not caring? Did you mean Dr. Hoefer who traveled in during a blizzard to check on my already hospitalized bird on her day off and then stayed with him all day because he wasnt' doing well? It isn't appropriate for you to imply on here that any of the doctors don't care about their patients. We each have our preferences and our reasons why, everyone has to find their own fit.
Looking for an avian vet near Rockville Centre. Any suggestions?

Joan Napolitano A big shout out to Dr Quesenberry and Dr Grodio at the Animal Medical Center at 510 E 62 nd Street. We brought Rainbow our 22 year old sun conure up there last week. Very thorough and professional. Their vet tech named Mo was fantastic at handling him as well. Can they be added to the club list?

Dr. Hoefer is amazing. She saved the lives of my birds a couple of times. In my book -- she's the best!
Julie K. replied:
Dr. Pilney at the Center for Avian and Exotic in Manhattan. Would follow him anywhere. There cannot be anyone better. (Though, if running to the upper west side in Manhattan is too far, I have heard good things about Dr. Monaco.)
Julie K. replied:
Well, I think Dr. Pilny isn't that far from Queens. As I said, I'd follow him anywhere. He has taken care of my two babies for 10 plus years and others I know in the bird community in NYC think VERY highly of him. He is knowledgeable, kind and caring. Very reponsive. As a matter of fact, I've met a number of rabbit owners and one ferret owner that feel the same about him. I did know a woman who had worked for Dr. Monaco some years ago. She always spoke very highly of him. I believe she continued to go to him with her birds and to recommend him even after she stopped working there. He is pretty easy to get to from Queens as well. I hope, whoever you choose to go to, your babies remain healthy and happy.
Marie T. replied:
I'm also in Queens. And see Dr. Pilny for my ferrets. I've since rehomed my foster tiels, but do know several parrot owners who see him. It takes me about an hour with traffic to get to The Center.
Linda A. replied:
Dr. Heidi Hoefer is GREAT vet and a wonderful, generous person. She used to treat the Wings of Love therapy birds for free. Dr. Monaco is also good but I find him somewhat expensive.
