I think that whether you can go to a specialist without a recommendation is usually based on your insurance. With PPOs and HMOs, it shouldn't matter. I would start by speaking with your insurance provider to find someone in network.

I've been going to see [Dr. Soleymani](http://www.nmpg.com/physician/david-soleymani-md) for a few years now. He's a great dermatologist and located near the North/Clybourn Red Line stop.

I have gone to Dermatology Chicago before (Dr. Shanker), and had a pretty good experience. I didn't need a referral (Blue Cross/Blue Shield PPO). They have a pretty crappy website, but they're legit. They're also in the Loop so technically not ideal for you, but pretty convenient: http://www.dermatology-chicago.com/Home_Page.html I think my copay was $20, but it's been about a year since I've been there. Also, your insurance determines whether or not you need a referral. If you have a PPO, you shouldn't need one.

i know it is not in the lincoln park / lakeview area but i would recommend dr burgess at loop dermatology (111 n wabash). easy appointments. small office. in and out during lunch breaks. quality service. those make her a winner in my book.

I've used Dermatology & Aesthetics of Wicker Park before. They were pretty good but they're wait time to schedule an appointment is usually around 6 weeks. Happy with their service though.

I'd like to choose a local doctor. Does anyone know of one who is more of a holistic thinker rather than just passing out pills?

try Dr. Halstead at Regional Med. center, he is new, but takes the time listen and talk to the patient, he is working on my diabetes 2 and trying to get me to regulate without meds
Lea P. replied:
My mom had her first visit with Dr. Lee yesterday and said she really likes him as a doctor. I will have to get his number if you want it

If you find one Alathea let me know. I have a wonderfully educated Doctor, who listens to you, works with you...trouble is, I can't see her! You have to book an appointment 3 months in advance, and anything before that you see a nurse practitioner. (Dr. Cheney) I haven't figured out how to know that I'm going to be sick, three months in advance It's like not having a doctor.
Pat D. replied:
I have no idea! All the doctors I know say to beware of health food store, and I love Truck Patch and the one on the square. Maybe ask at the Health Food Stores??? I bet they'd know if a doctor was encouraging holistic.
Alathea D. replied:
That's a good idea. I'll ask at The Truck Patch. I love that place.
Happy Mother's Day!

Can anyone recommend an integrative/naturopathic doctor in the Chicagoland area, preferably the northern suburbs?
Myra H. replied:
Yes, yes, yes! Dr. Gore at the Center for Holistic Medicine. He has an office of a ton of different practitioners. I have seen him and many others who have been a huge help in ways Western medicine never could have. An awesome supplement to Western medicine. Private message or email me if any more questions.
