Does anyone have a suggestion for a local vet or a trainer that helps with dog anxiety? I have a boxer/pit that is scared of so many things, any loud noises, the dark,...

I have a boxer pittie who initially would not let anyone trim her nails. We started out with a mild tranquilizer from the vet 1 hour ahead of time, then a Thundershirt and very understanding groomer ( Vivian at Doggie GoGo in Stow) and eventually weaned her off the tranquilizer. 3 years later she is just fine with just the shirt and doesn't even stiffen up. I use the Thundershirt on her when storms approach. It does help.

Separation anxiety is a real hit and miss with techniques... You need to make sure there is nothing physical going on with him first...meds can help during the process of training...we went to Bill Oliver in Brecksville and learned a lot with our Old English Sheepdog...

Hi Shanda, Not only am I a dog trainer but my dog suffers from the same type of extreme anxiety. When she has an episode she either spins until she drops or she chews on her feet and tail until they are bloody. We are able to help her cope through a regime of consistency and exercise. Feel free to give me a call to discuss your options. Shannon 330-690-6738www.Facebook.com/gooddogohio

You definitely do not want to force the dog into a situation he fears. That is called flooding and will make things worse.:( I would suggest you check out the Fearful Dogs FB group. Debbie Jacobs actively moderates and you will find her advice scientifically sound and effective. For a local vet, Dr Amy Cummings (was Moore) at Creekside in Norton is well versed in behavior and can help you understand medication that can work in conjunction with training to manage and overcome these fears. And for a trainer, I would suggest you work with a force-free trainer like L'Chaim Canine, All Dogs Go To Kevin, or WoofWise. Good luck!
