Where can I volunteer in olympia? I moved here a few months ago, and haven't had much luck finding a job. I really need something to occupy my days M-F, and I would love...

As someone who moved here a couple months ago myself (also a graphic designer, but not my current career path) I'd recommend looking for some seasonal work for various retail places, it isn't too hard and seems to be in pretty high demand. I put in an online application to Toys R Us and got a call literally 10 minutes later asking for an interview. I'm afraid I'm in the same boat as you for not knowing volunteer stuff, but I hope this can at least help in regards to some employment, while you seek a more permanent graphics job. Best of luck!

Check out Community Youth Services. http://www.communityyouthservices.org/ Volunteering may turn into a great position, with a great future. Good luck.

The Hands On Children's Museum! They treat their volunteers really well, and are super flexible about hours. They have a lot of options for jobs, including ones that don't involve managing small children. They've also got an amazing art room, and the volunteer coordinator is really helpful and kind. PM if you have more questions :) I've been there for over two summers.

If you like farm animals you should check out Nature Nurtures Farm. All of the animals are rescues and they do a lot of work with children in need. I just started volunteering there and I love it http://www.naturenurturesfarm.org/Get_Involved_XT6L.html

Olympia Film Society downtown. Free movies and food for volunteers!

Hands On Children's Museum and Thurston County Food Bank both probably have opportunities for you to do career specific volunteering. I know that the Food Bank in particular encourages creative volunteerism, soooooo you could probably redesign some things for them.

The Olympia Joint Animal Services shelter sometimes needs their volunteers to do graphic design stuff. They're very nice there and you play with animals for your time there.
Wondering if any graphic designer friends out there would be willing to volunteer for the Olympia Downtown Ambassadors to create one educational 1/2 sheet that we can...

But must publicly say that I LOVE the idea of a "master list" of artists! We've put out RFPs for muralists (got advice from Stephanie Johnson at the City, although we are private ourselves so ours was a bit different). But if we could contact more local people, the better! (Although Ira Coyne has obviously been our committee's favorite for a while )

Hey Rob - to not reinvent the wheel - give the ODA office a call. They probaby have material regarding Graffiti abatment. It is why we have our mural program through the Design Committee (which is still alive, just delayed this year.) We've done research, and it is often a topic at Main Street conferences - if not at a break out class, at least in the conversations we have with other Main Streeters!
Erica C. replied:
Oh, and I know Amy Stull at OPD has a ton of info on Crime Prevention through Environmental Design - took a workshop that she put on through the city, and she has done a Downtown Academy.

My shop is called Allycat Accessories. There's a really famous decoden store that's tagline is "Inspired by everything cute!" and I wanted something fun and memorable like that. My mom said "Crafty is in my genes" and my dad said "I like to make stuff" So essentially I have nothing...
