Recommend a driving instructor? Hi r/Toronto! I'm a newcomer to Toronto with 5+ years of driving experience in my home country. I have a G1 license and would like to...

At the ripe old age of 22, I finally decided to get my G1 this spring. I'm just using Young Drivers, but my in-car instructor, Jeff, has been wonderful.

It's been a long time since I was looking at driving schools, but [Young Drivers](https://www.yd.com/Default.aspx) used to have a package in which you are taken for a refresher prior to your road test, then use the instructor's vehicle for the test. I'm sure they'd be happy to provide some preliminary refresher lessons before your test date too.

I'm 25 and recently got my G2. I had an earlier G2 license but it lapsed, plus I wasn't using it at all. This time I'm making good use of my G2 with a car.
Like others have mentioned I did mine through Young Drivers but this was the second time I did a driving school. First time was through some asian driving school, which in hindsight was a bad idea. They practically gave away answers in the in-class tests, didn't stop to ensure the class got the concepts, and the in-car instructor... I still have bitterness and bad memories dealing with the instructor. (Worse, he was technically a family friend.)
YD sounded hyped up at first but it turned out to be a good pick. Class was engaging if a bit sleep inducing at times, but the in-car instructor was great. Turns out driving instructors CAN take you on highways (first instructor didn't), although they're not required to. Having experience hopping on highways was immensely helpful, since with a G1 you are only allowed to drive on highways with a licensed instructor in the passenger seat.
Also be sure to find a friend or relative with at least 4 years of G to sit in the passenger seat and let you practice. Cannot stress this enough - that practice is crucial. You're likely to mess up horribly if you stick with just driving lessons for your driving.
... but to directly answer your question, any instructor from YD is good. They usually pick one based on where you are.

I just finished with Canadian Tire Drivers Academy. I learned a lot and I passed the first time. I was taught how to fix my own car and also received a year of roadside assistance incase something happens. It is great for my peace of mind driving in Toronto. I would highly recommend it and if you need the course, I have a way for you to get a discount on your course. leave your email or phone below and I will contact you with the discount code.

That certificate will help you get lower rates later on. Edit: Make sure whatever school you pick is on this list: http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/gradu/approve.shtml

I did my lessons with Canadian Tire Driver's Academy (yeah yeah, but they were actually good) and my in-car instructor was an ex-MTO tester. Maybe give them a call? [http://driversacademy.canadiantire.ca/](http://driversacademy.canadiantire.ca/)

I'm a little biased obviously as I worked for Young Drivers for about 3 years in two cities (London and Toronto), but they are a super-professional company with regular ongoing training requirements for their own instructors. I'd recommend them wholeheartedly if you are interested in actually learning to drive defensively. They are quite pricey though.
If you just want to learn to pass the test than any reputable driving school will probably do. The driving test(s) are basically a game you need to learn the rules to. Once you know the "rules" (e.g., drive in the right lane unless you're turning left, pay massive attention to your speed and the posted limit, make FULL stops, avoid turning right on a yellow light, start creeping straight forward on the yellow light if you are turning left, etc) then it is partly a game of chance (examiner's mood and perception of you, other traffic, traffic lights you hit, pedestrians being dorks, etc).

Young Drivers has always been the best rated driver school. Don't just go with some guy who works out of his house. I learned things in Young Drivers that I never even would've thought of, and over 15 years later, I'm still putting them into practice. I can pretty confidently say that some of the things I learned from their instructors probably saved my life on at least once occasion. Don't cut corners, do it properly. For you, and for everyone else on the road.

I took lessons through [All-Pro Driving School](http://www.allprodrivingschool.ca/) in Etobicoke and I passed both my G2 and G tests on the first attempt. My instructor was the owner, Juan. He used to be a Toronto police officer, so he was able to give a few extra tips about complying with traffic laws. Sometimes you have to chase him down to schedule a lesson, but overall I'm pretty happy with him.

YD is the best, but I couldn't afford the rates. After shopping around I went with AMB, the Broadview/Danforth location. Passed my G1 road test (to get my G2 licence) on the first try :)

Young Drivers of Canada. Great instruction; good, patient teachers, and you can reduce his mind you have to wait to get your G1 by a couple of months I believe.

I’m looking for a driving instructor, do you know anyone? (North York area) First of all, I’m 35 years old. There’s nothing wrong with me, it really just wasn’t...

This man is somebody I recommend to everybody I know learning to drive because of how well he taught me, (647) 989-7701. His name’s Shawn. Good luck!

Do you know what the situation is with scheduling tests? I had the same useless experience with Young Drivers, waste of time and money. I hope you find someone who actually cares about getting you through the test.

I am the best instructor you can find in TO, no question about it. I have sent you a DM. Once driving instructor services resume, no matter who you go with for driving lessons, you must make sure you and your instructor have a facemask on at all times in the car. COVID transmits easily in confined spaces. A maskless instructor is a sign of one that doesn't care.
