Hi all, apologies again for righting in English. I in the market for a long distance sailing yacht in Norway. I've found one that I think it suitable but I'm not sure of...

Sorry for the lack of information, while I done a fair amount of long distance sailing this will be my first boat purchase so I'm new to the process. The specific boat I'm looking at is a 9 year old Ovni down in Porsgrunn. From talking to the owner and from my own unskilled inspection she seems to be maintained in excellent condition. However, as this boat has to carry us across oceans I would be more comfortable with a professional opinion. Finn code is http://www.finn.no/finn/boat/used/object?finnkode=60316080 Thanks Håkon Ingvaldsen for the recommendation in Oslo, I'll give them a call to discuss. I'm still interested in the process of actually buying and exchanging papers etc. My only experience is from the USA which always involves brokers and solicitors. I guess Norway is different/simpler?

Stein Varjord - Thank you for that detailed reply and summary of the process; it is exactly what I was looking for. I'm also glad to hear you don't have to pay the usual US 5% to three different parties just to buy a boat. Håkon Ingvaldsen & Bjorn Lorentzen - Thanks also for the warning and information about sailing in EU waters. My wife and I are officially now residents in Norway but carrying a EU passport I'm obviously worried about the implications of sailing a NOR registered yacht in the EU for any period of time. I've spoken to a few people on this forum and also the people who run noonsite to try to get to the bottom of the current rules. The short version seems to be that Norway is part of the EEA and therefore does NOT qualify for the 18 months that would be afforded to an true non-EU boat (USA for example). Boats registered in Norway or Iceland are only allowed 6 months sailing time in the EU officially - assuming they are skipped by Norwegian residents. However, and importantly, no-one in the EU seems to care about that fact at the moment and treats all NOR yachts with Norwegian residents skippers with the 18 month rules. The only exceptions I have been able to find was a Norwegian powerboat in Portugal that was seized - but I think the skipper was resident in the EU. And the other exception seems to be Greece which is consistently doing their own thing on this matter. Having said all that, our plan is to cross to the Caribbean quickly and not spend too long hanging around in the EU. Thanks again for your help - nice people in this group!

Why buy a yacht with Norwegian vat paid, if you aren't Norwegian, and will sail in the Caribian? Yachtworld.com have lots of non vat paid boats for sale. You can register an boat in Norway without paying vat to Norway, as long you don't sail in Norway
