There's plenty of stuff going on on Street #172 - cheap accommodation, food , beer and the likes. Plenty of expats and backpackers to meet around there. As seen below, massively depends on your budget. Anything from $3 - $500/night is possible heh.

Backpacker ghetto - Mad Monkey. I had loads of fun there though. Might have to call ahead. Nicer but still laid back - Lucky Gecko Guesthouse Street 172, 178, and Long Gnet are also good areas. Avoid Riverside, especially area round St. 240. Avoid city center near street 51.

Good breakfast, nice staff and walking distance to restaurants and touristy stuff. It is down a somewhat dirty alleyway (5-10 meters from the road) but there was always locals around (families having dinner etc) and the guesthouse was clean and safe.
