You know the old saying, "The best piece of safety equipment is the one between your ears". Unloaded pickups are notoriously easy to spin and get stuck. He's not going to get very far up into the mountains on unplowed roads with it. Other than that, though, he can learn its limitations and how to drive and do just fine on the highways and city streets all winter. My only vehicle was a 1/2 ton chevy pickup for years before I got a front-wheel-drive car, and it was fine. My inclination in his case, assuming money is tight, is to leave the summer tires on, and carry tire chains and a shovel all winter. And learn to drive appropriately for the conditions. If we happen to get a seriously big snowstorm, it's usually okay to stay home for a day until they get the roads plowed.
