Here is page 1-11 "Trailer Towing" from the original 1979 Firebird owner's manual. It says you can tow up to 1000 lbs (450 kg). Hopefully that's all the proof you need:

I owned a 76 that has an original towing hook, good for 910 kg, in Sweden. Search for reg nr JER763 on https://fordonsfraga.transportstyrelsen.se/fragapaannatfordon.aspx and you will find some towing data.
